DION DAWSON — FULL BIOGRAPHY- We Are AM Agency

Dion Dawson was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago — one of the most historically underserved and under-resourced communities in the United States. Growing up, he witnessed firsthand what it meant to live in a neighborhood where fresh food was scarce, opportunity felt distant, and the systems designed to serve communities like his consistently fell short. But where others saw deficiency, Dion saw a design problem. And design problems, he believed, had solutions.
That belief became the foundation of everything he would go on to build.

Today, Dion Dawson is a 2x founder, TED speaker, Rockefeller Foundation Big Bets Fellow, Echoing Green Fellow, and one of the most consequential social entrepreneurs operating in America right now. He is the founder and Chief Dreamer of Dion's Chicago Dream — one of the nation's most efficient Food-Is-Medicine organizations and the CEO of Cosmic Crate, a logistics technology platform scaling Food-as-Medicine programs for mission-driven teams nationwide. His work sits at the intersection of social entrepreneurship, health equity, technology, and systems innovation, proving that sustainable, lasting change requires both compassionate vision and uncompromising operational excellence.
Building Dion's Chicago Dream

Dion launched Dion's Chicago Dream from Chicago's South Side with a simple but radical conviction: food insecurity is not inevitable. It is solvable through better infrastructure, smarter logistics, and intentional community design. What began as a grassroots operation quickly evolved into something far larger than anyone around him initially anticipated.

Under Dion's leadership, Dion's Chicago Dream has scaled from a startup into a $7M Food-Is-Medicine organization that delivers 250,000+ pounds of fresh produce monthly across 182 zip codes reaching 5,300+ households every single week. The organization has raised $15M+, created 60+ living-wage jobs directly within the communities it serves, completed 446K+ last-mile deliveries, and achieved an extraordinary 6,400% growth rate all while maintaining positive margins. That last detail matters deeply to Dion. Profitability in a mission-driven space is not a compromise; it is proof that the model works and that it can last.

Dion's Chicago Dream operates through integrated healthcare partnerships, delivering fresh food as a frontline health intervention to households across Chicagoland and beyond. The organization has served tens of thousands of households monthly across 80% of Chicagoland — making it one of the most expansive community food distribution networks in the country.

The Technology Layer — Cosmic Crate

Dion has never been content to solve one problem in one city. His logistics-first approach to food distribution taught him something critical: the infrastructure he built was scalable, replicable, and desperately needed elsewhere. That insight became Cosmic Crate — a logistics technology platform designed to power Food-as-Medicine programs for other mission-driven organizations nationwide.
Cosmic Crate is now entering a $15B national market created by Medicare's Food-as-Medicine initiatives, which are actively reshaping how America thinks about healthcare delivery and reimbursement. As federal policy increasingly recognizes food as a frontline health intervention, Dion and Cosmic Crate are already positioned to lead — not catch up. He saw where the policy was heading, built the infrastructure before the market arrived, and is now scaling it nationally. Recognition, Fellowship & Thought Leadership

Dion's work has earned him recognition at the highest levels of American institutional life. He is a Rockefeller Foundation Big Bets Fellow, an Echoing Green Fellow, an Aspen Institute Food Leaders Fellow, a University of Chicago Civic Leadership Academy Fellow, and a Chicago Council on Global Affairs Emerging Leader. He completed the Harvard Nonprofit Executive Education Program and currently serves on the USDA Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture — bringing a community operator's perspective directly to the national policy table.
In 2025 alone, he was named to Crain's Chicago Business 40 Under 40, one of the most coveted recognitions in Chicago's business community.

Dion has shared platforms with President Barack Obama and Ellen DeGeneres, appeared on the TODAY Show, been featured by the CBC, Fox 32, Crain's Chicago Business, and the Chicago Crusader, and been recognized by the White House End Hunger Challenge and the Chicago Innovation Award. He is a TED speaker who has taken the TED stage to share his vision for what food infrastructure can look like when it is built with data, discipline, and deep community roots.
Today, Dion advises Fortune 500 companies, philanthropic institutions, and policy leaders on building equitable systems at scale. He speaks regularly at universities including the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and serves on the advisory board at Tufts University, where his work informs research on food systems, nutrition equity, and community health outcomes. He has built partnerships with the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Sky, Chicago Blackhawks, GoFundMe, Aspen Institute, Community Goods, and more — connecting sports, philanthropy, and consumer brands to his food access mission.

The Man Behind the Mission

What makes Dion Dawson remarkable is not just what he has built, it is how he has built it and who he has remained throughout. He never left the South Side. Every job created, every pound of produce delivered, every zip code served traces back to the community that shaped him. He has turned down easier paths and more comfortable positions because the real work has always been here, in the neighborhoods that needed someone to stay and build.

Dion speaks openly about the role of faith in his entrepreneurship the moments of doubt before the breakthroughs, the decisions that looked wrong on paper but felt undeniably right, and the conviction that a community's worth is never determined by the resources it has been given but by the systems it is empowered to build. He is an equal parts operator and storyteller, strategist and servant leader — someone who can talk margins and Medicare policy in one breath and community, faith, and legacy in the next.

He is not building a moment. He is building infrastructure designed to outlast him — and he is only just getting started.
